The classroom supplies you already bought could be worth $250 back

If you teach in Canada, some of the money you spend on your own classroom can come back to you at tax time. It is called the Eligible Educator School Supply Tax Credit, and most teachers we talk to either have not heard of it or assume it is too small to bother with. It is not.
What the credit actually is
The credit is worth 25% of up to $1,000 in eligible supplies you buy out of your own pocket — so up to $250 back. Better still, it is refundable: you get the money even if you already owe no tax at the end of the year. That is unusual and it matters. A lot of tax breaks only help you if you have a balance to reduce. This one pays out regardless.
To claim it you need to be an eligible educator — a teacher or early childhood educator with a valid certificate or diploma — and the supplies have to be things you actually use in the classroom or child-care setting.
What qualifies
The Canada Revenue Agency's list is broader than people expect. Consumables like pens, paper, glue, art supplies, and flashcards qualify. So do some durable goods: books, games, puzzles, containers, and educational software. The rule of thumb is that the item is used directly with students and you were not reimbursed for it.
What does not qualify is worth knowing too — items your school paid you back for, and things bought for personal use rather than teaching. The item decides, not the store. A pack of markers from a big-box run on the same receipt as your groceries still counts; you just need the receipt to prove it.
The part that trips people up
The credit is simple. Keeping a year of receipts is not. By April, the pack of construction paper you bought in September is a faded thermal-paper slip at the bottom of a bag — if it still exists at all. The CRA can ask you to back up the claim, and "I know I spent it" is not a receipt.
This is exactly the gap Crumbli was built to close for teachers. Snap a photo of the receipt at the till, or forward the order confirmation email to your private Crumbli address, and we pull out the vendor, date, and total and flag what looks like an eligible classroom supply. At tax time you have a clean, categorized list instead of a shoebox — and the certificate your principal signs is ready to go.

Not sure whether it is worth the effort? Our teacher tax credit calculator gives you a number in about ten seconds — just enter what you spent and it estimates your refund.
The supplies are already bought. The only question is whether you keep the receipts well enough to claim them. Start with the teacher page to see how Crumbli handles that part for you.
